Bloody Hamburger

Last night I saw Death Cab for Cutie. Fun. In 1991 I probably would have owned all their cd's.
After that show, headed over to the Larimer Lounge to see Nick Oliveri the bassist for Queens of the Stone Age do his "first ever" acoustic set. It was odd. Summed up by Sean saying "you're only one step away from open mic night". Amazing a guy can play to arena sized crowds in qotsa and then, with 50 people, he's totally nervous.

It's because he sucked, and he knew it. When you're good, you can pull it off on pure chutzpah, getting high on your own supply. When you suck, you get into a bad negative feedback loop.

"Did that suck?"

"Oh, God, I just alternated shouting and sing-songing the phrase 'Bloody Hammer' about 10 times."

"Ack. That cute girl knows I suck. Even my undoubtably-post-rehab groupie girlfriend who's all into me 'for my art' knows I suck and can't hold the camcoder still from the sniggering. No, wait. She's totally digging it. I don't know which is worse."

"Whoa, Mark's totally wasted and he sounds about a hundred times better than I do."

"'There's a party in your mouth?' Did I just say that?"

"Dear Lord, take me now."
