I finally read The DaVinci Code.
Maybe I'm just a grump but I was disappointed. After all the hub-bub and supposed religion cracking buzz, I thought it would be a little more literature and a little less, "The Hawker 731's twin Garrett TFE-731 engines thundered, powering the plane skyward with gut-wrenching force" - all Clive Cussler like.
My 14 year old nephew would probably like it and it'll probably be an entertaining movie, but I'm going to twitch if I hear the term "literature" associated with it.
Oh, and as for "shaking up christendom" or any of that, I can't fathom it, the "conclusions" or intimations are for plot fun, not much historical interest - Dan Brown did a good job of disguising it as "fact" - similar to the way I really want to believe James Bond has all those gadgets....
It's a bummer people are interested enough in religiousity to get excited about a book like this, but so few pick up the bible and read a gospel or two. Much more fun to criticize something you actually know something about.
ot - you should put the pixies on your upcoming list
Posted by: hubs at September 17, 2004 04:02 PMI know...but...I'm not sure I'm going to make it to that show...the price tag is killing me...
Posted by: mh at September 17, 2004 11:45 PMwell said.
the author tries to pass of his fiction as fact, mostly because he has an agenda. the "facts" stated at the beginning of the book have very little historical relevance, and are easily disproven, if anyone takes the short amount of time to check them.

Posted by: gijyun at September 18, 2004 01:40 AMIf you want religious conspiracy-theory fiction novel with tons of facts then you should read Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco.
I read Angels and Demons (The prequel) and I really liked it, mainly because there was enough historical detail and conspiracy to keep my left brain going, with enough action to keep my right brain occupied, and by the end, didn't make any attacks on religion.
As far as fact checking goes, as the movie 'Conspiracy Theory' said: the best conspiracy theory is an unprovable one.
Posted by: uh at September 18, 2004 08:54 AMI want to read The Da Vinci Code but I'm waiting for it to come out in paperback. I hate lugging around heavy hardback books.
Posted by: teahouseblossom at September 22, 2004 11:41 AMI say wait for it to come out as a movie...
